Learning to Do Cross-Stitch / 学做十字绣

This is done by Aunt
Aunt 华 is my father’s younger sister. She and my uncle-in-law came to look after my mama after she was diagnosed with cancer. Mama’s younger sister 芳 would like to thank her and her husband for their kindness. She bought them lots of essentials including seafood, fruits and vegetables as she saw that they were financially quite tight. In return, aunt 华 wanted to give her something. As aunt 芳 is a nun, she was thinking to make a cross-stitch of the Guanyin portrait. This time when I went home, mama showed me her work. Wow, it’s really a piece of art work. She framed it and sprinkled some golden coloured powder so that it looked very shiny, as if Buddha had some mysterious power. Inspired by her work, I also wanted to try it for myself! I happened to see it being sold along the roadside when I went shopping at Walmart. It was a sofa cushion already fully made, even with a zip. Only the cross-stitch was left to be done. It cost only ¥25 (S$5.12). No one had ever taught me how to do it before and so it was fully based on my imagination. The Chinese designers made our learning very easy and interesting. First, I believe they soaked the fabric in the water and corn starch. Once it gets a bit hard, it becomes easy to hold. The different coloured threads were labeled with numbers. With clear instructions, even a beginner will be able to follow very easily. When I told mama that I had already finished, she couldn’t believe that I had such patience. “Nothing surprises, like the aunt, like the niece!” I told her.
